This morning I noticed that I could not get up to speed, I was tired. I ate a Clif Gel and a Clif Bar (Chocolate Brownie) against my will (together with a cola) and that did the trick. The only problem I have is getting warmed up in the morning. Maybe I'll try to eat a gel when I start tomorrow morning.

The first 100 kilometers I cycled by myself until I saw Maarten and Machiel in my rear view mirror. Machiel was on the phone when he pulled up next to me. Turns out he had someone from the newspaper on the phone and they heard about the story I told on the camp ground yesterday evening and the wanted to talk to me. At that moment I was holding a can of cola and you can't drink that, make a call and cycle at the same time, so I stopped. When I was standing still there was nobody on the on the line and I got punked. They found a phone on the shoulder somewhere.

Temperatures were good, a little lower than the days before. Also the shadow from the many trees made for a nice cycling weather. It was around 30 to 35 degrees. The route mainly went by the Mississippi River. Sometimes it went up, and then down again. And don't forget about a good clean shoulder.

I keep noticing things. Every other mile or so they have a 'Adopt a Highway' sign. Often there is a sign underneath it with the name op people (family or friends of a deceased person), a school, company or club. I guess the pay to keep the highway clean. I also spotted around three or four Bald Eagles, beautiful big animals. I'm also very contempt with my Walz Cap. It helps me protect my face and neck from burning and it stays on my head, even while doing a 70+ km/h downhill.

About 66 kilometers before we reached our final destination Johann and I ate a ice cream when Josef was talking to a reporter and a photographer. Our bikes were photographed and Johann got to answer some questions. Tomorrow will see if we made the paper.

ROAM 2011 - Day 18 (ice cream)

We for once arrived nice and late on the camp ground, but that has its advantages. It was a full moon.
