125th anniversary KGR De Hunze

Our rowingclub is celebrating it's 25e lustrum, we were founded 125 years ago on February 19th 1886. Today we have about 400 members, which is also a reason to party.

Home server / media center

The plan was to create a home server that also acts as a media center. On the attic I had a old PC laying around which I first used to install Ubuntu Server to experiment with. I quickly threw away this idea because the computer was pulling about 180 watt in the idle mode. It would cost me around € 350 for power each year. For that kind money I could (almost) buy a new, more power efficient, computer. And that's exactly what I did.

Not fast enough

It was busy the last two days at our rowing club. The yearly Gyas-Hunze race was being held and our team Fier would compete on the 2,8 km race on Saturday and the 750 meter sprint on Sunday.

Turbulent day

In many way's this was a day that I won't forget. First Velox Incendia (my velomobile) turned 1. Secondly the wind was blowing fiercely and this was the first time for me to ride in a storm. According to the weather it was about 5-6 bft (about 50 km/h) with gusts up to 80 km/h. And lastly, I was surprised in a very unpleasant way, but more on that later.

Norhern Velomobile Ride 2011

Last year I rode with a borrowed bike, because my own bike wasn't finished yet, but this year I drove my own bike. Better yet, I didn't have to cycle to the meeting point because I lived there. That's convenient, I didn't have to get up early. Well... you do have to take care of the people arriving, there has to be tea and coffee.

Angry driver

A day as today can be quite eventful. I left work and took my car to get some lunch. On the access road they were working on a gas pipe for a while so one half of the road was inaccessible. Last year they had placed traffic lights, but they were stolen twice, so now there were just signs to guide the traffic. As I already mentioned I was driving in my car past the road works. I took it slow because people were at work and a big excavator was working and I do not want to drive into it.

Ready for the darkness

Since the first ride on my rowingbike I haven't gotten around to riding it again. Last week I had 24/7 stand-by from work and that meant carrying a laptop with me (not so very handy). This week I don't have to but there still is another problem, I haven't fitted the bike with a headlight and that was necessary for biking to and from work in the dark. The mounting point was there and so was the headlight, but the problem was that the light was to far back and the footslider would crash into it if I started to use the bike.

Heatmap bike rides (2010)

A heatmap is a image where data is represented in a graphical way using color differences or intensities. In my case I created a map where all my non-commute rides are shown.

Oliebollenride 2010

This time in the far-away Tilbug, but that isn't much of a problem. For me this was the first time, seeing I only own a velomobile since this February this year. I'd reserved a couple of day's for cycling to and from Tilburg. The first day before the ride I went to IJsselstein where I could stay at Maarten S. his place for the night. The alarm clock would go off at 6 AM and 1,5 hour later I was in the bike. The day's before the ride I worried a bit about the amount of snow I'd encounter on the way there and if the bike paths would be clean enough, but generally speaking it wasn't to bad.

First ride on my Rowingbike Thys 209

Last Sunday I received my new bike and yesterday afternoon I was able to ride it for the first time. Fortunately the roads were mostly clean. In some spots there was still some snow, but for 99% the roads were clean. The last time I rode a rowingbike was about half year ago, but this time it went quite well. Only getting started and riding at slow speeds still needs a bit of practice. This Monday I'm leaving for the Oliebollentocht in Tilburg (in the South of The Netherlands), I will be back on Thursday.
