XL goes XS
Yesterday morning I drove to Groningen to park my car at Anton L. his place and take the bike and go to our rowing club. I would be steering a women's team at 9 AM. But just before I arrived at Anton's place I got a phone call that it was canceled because of the hard wind (later there was given a rowing ban because of the weather). So we could go to Dronten early for a QuestXS test ride. But first it was time for a cup of tea.

Training for the 4 mijl of Groningen
A bit late but still. Last week I've started training for the 4 mile of Groningen, a race which I do every year. Last year I put down a amazing time of 27:25.3, against all expectations. This year calls for a improvement. But there is a lack of training. Last weekend I started running and today was my second time. Six intervals of each two minutes running and one minute walking. It went pretty good. My condition was good enough that I could keep up. Next week I'll go out running two more times and that should be enough I think.

Cycling in circles
Last Sunday there was the annualy recumbent competition in Groningen, the Ems-Dollard cup: Groningen-Rutenbrock. Two years ago I visited and watched, but didn't compete due to a achilles tendent injury. This year was different. The day before I picked up my bike which had been on the ocean for four weeks. All that time I haven't cycled and I was curious what my condition would do. I expected to end up somewhere in the middle, but unfortunately that was not the case... I ended in the last 30%. I blame the fact that the week before (and I still am) a little ill.

Picked up our bikes
After we've been up for 26 hours straight we went to bed around 10 PM. I for once really needed that. I got to sleep in until 4:30 AM. Hmmm, jetlag? Closed my eyes and try sleep again. Breakfast as around 8:30 AM and after that we were going to pick up our bikes. Three big pieces of bread with syrup, jam and peanut butter (well, not the kind I'm used to) and a number glasses of orange juice were digested. Then it was finally time to head down to the warehouse where our bikes were waiting for us. The unpacking went very quickly and within two hours we all stood on the loading area.

Two medals and a souvenir
Last Saturday I competed in the International Pentecost Rowing competition in Delfzijl. A fun competition where anything goes. There are a number of mixed fields where men an women are together in the same boat. Usually that is uncommon in competitions, but in Delfzijl that's no problem. In the first heat I rowed with four women (and of course three men) in a Mix8+. After that I steered a 8+ which I have never done before (I have my steering degrees, but it hasn't home to it yet).

My bike is gone
Last Thursday a couple of velonauts came to visit and do some bike riding the next day. It was going to be our last ROAM weekend. Earlier I had done Bennekom and Roermond and the final weekend was in Groningen. Coincidence? No, yesterday we had to deliver our bikes to be shipped to America. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Man down
Just like last week I wanted to cycle a bit with the Huneliggers. A week ago there were only two cyclists (me and Marjon) but today that number would double. We were accompanied by Georg and Anton. We had agreed to meet at 11 AM near the little church in Noorddijk (to the upper right of Groningen). But before I got there something went wrong. I just left home about 5 minutes ago when a group of cyclist were coming my way on the cycle path next to the Van Starkenborghkanaal (which is not unusual on a Sunday morning). Just...

Rowing on the Amstel
Weeks of training and preparation, but last weekend we rowed the Head of the River Amstel. The adventure started on Saturday morning. I had to pick up a team mate from Groningen at 8 AM. On the A1 the ring of Amsterdam there were planned road works so we left a bit early. Afterward it wasn't that bad and a parking space was quickly found. So about 1,5 hours early we reached or destination, the rowing club Poseidon.

What a ROAM weekend!
Sunshine, rain, wind, kilometers, discomfort, accidents, wetness and more of those kind of things. That sums about up the weekend. Okay, a number of those things were unplanned, but it was still a weekend full of happenings. But I'll start at the beginning.

Not fast enough
It was busy the last two days at our rowing club. The yearly Gyas-Hunze race was being held and our team Fier would compete on the 2,8 km race on Saturday and the 750 meter sprint on Sunday.
